So about 100+ years ago, three Sawatzky brothers came from Russia and settled near Aberdeen, Saskatchewan. The three farms were side by side and they went on to have large families of 9+ children. Bert’s Father had to sell the farm in 1945 due to declining health and he sold it to his niece Esther and her new husband Abe. Esther still lives on the farm where my dad was born so we went down for a visit. Today, Esther leases out the land and lives in the house. The original house came down in the 70s, but the old Sawatzky barn stood until just a few years ago. The only original building left is the chicken coop, which has seen better days but is a great remnant of the past. The Potato patch alone is larger than my entire lot in Vancouver!
